A Bumbling Performance in Tampa

Anyone wishing that Jeff Garcia was suiting up for the Vikings right about now?

Hats off to Garcia for dominating this Vikings defense today in Tampa -- his ability to escape pressure, keep plays alive, and work the short and intermediate passing games was the difference this afternoon.  Just look at the stat line: The Vikings defense finished the game with a grand total of one sack, and the front four could only manage nine tackles.

And when you look at the production that each team got out of the quarterback position, there could hardly be a bigger contrast.  Frerotte fell flat on his face.  For that matter, the Vikings offense as a whole fell on their collective face.

Frerotte had his feet planted in the turf from start to finish, as the Buccaneers took advantage of his laughable lack of mobility and absolutely pummeled him.  However, the offensive line obviously isn't blameless for the fact that Gus spent a considerable amount of time on the grass of Raymond James Stadium.  Ryan Cook was particularly atrocious.

The bottom line is that Garcia stepped up -- Frerotte and company didn't.  And when you're on the road and facing a superior team, that's a sure-fire recipe for a loss.

If you're looking for a perfect symbol of how the Vikings performed, look no further than their final drive of the game.  With just under two minutes remaining, they were handed an absolute gift of a missed Matt Bryant field goal -- thus, they had one final opportunity to steal a win.  Their drive went like this: offensive pass interference, sack, fumble.  It was that general carelessness that characterized today's performance for the Vikings offense.

In today's game, we also saw something that happens from time to time -- Childress drifting away from the running game.  When Gruden gives the ball to Warrick Dunn (20 carries) more than Childress gives the ball to Adrian Peterson (19 carries), we have a major problem.  Couple that with the fact that Chester was only given seven touches (five carries, two receptions), and you've got a coaching staff that isn't doing its offense any favors.

There aren't a lot of easy answers for this team.  Between Frerotte, JDB and T-Jack, there just isn't a good option at the quarterback position -- and despite his recent slump, I still believe that Frerotte is the best we've got.  We saw that Childress continues to be erratic in his use of Peterson.  And Garcia revealed this team's inability to contain a mobile quarterback.  It's truly anyone's ballgame in the NFC North right now, but it's hard to be optimistic about the Vikings' chances.

I cannot believe that Ryan Cook is still on the field for the Vikings, much less starting. He has to be the worst offensive lineman in the league. I simply do not know why he is allowed to steal a paycheck week after week.

Ryan Cook isn't the "worst offensive lineman in the league." He is just your scapegoat. The only thing that he leads the O line in is false start penalties and penalty yards (everyone has 2 holding calls except Hutchinson). I'll give you that one, but for the season he ranks third in sacks given up: LT=4.5, LG=4, C=1, RG=3, RT=3.5.

If you want to talk run production, Football Outsiders haven't updated their stats yet for the week, but his are lower than the rest of the line but by no means worst in the league.

I could ask the question, if he is worst, why isn't somebody else on the roster starting? You could answer by saying he is Childress' boy, but if he was willing to yank TJack, why not Cook?

You scapegoat should be the coach not utilizing his assets properly and calling poor games.

I have to say the playcalling has gotten better over the weeks, but I think they should have come out of the gates using Peterson. And there was a time with 5 minutes left and all timeouts, but we still chose to pass the ball. The Hicks fumble was a killer but over all there was never a sense of urgency and that is a consistent problem. Hats off to Garcia who found a way to dominate our defensive line, and scramble TB's way to victory. If Garcia wasn't on the field the outcome would have been different for sure.

To me it is truly baffling how Ryan Cook has not been replaced by someone who is capable of blocking a defensive lineman without commiting a penalty. Whenever a Viking qb is being flushed out of the pocket, there is an excellent chance that the first player to cause it was the man Cook was supposed to be blocking. The failure to replace such an obvious weak link on an already underperforming offensive line, is just indicative of the very poor coaching ability of one Brad Childress.

Thought you might be dropping by to defend Cook, Luft. ;) I've admitted in the past that I've exaggerated my criticism of him, but this week, he just had a good old fashion lousy game. Not saying he should be benched -- but he stunk it up this week. And Jeremy, I'm with you all the way on AD -- in today's column, I talked about the fact that Chilly didn't use Peterson on any of the plays in the second-to-last drive, even though they had plenty of time. Another head-scratcher.

Even though I know Bobby Wade has been solid, but I am wondering why it seems like Wade is the only person Ferotte is looking for. We need to get Sidney Rice more involved, even though he had the injury, it seems like everytime Ferotte throws the ball in his direction Sidney catches it (Except for the horrible 4th down throw by ferotte).

And even though I don't believe Ryan Cook is a starting RT, you really cannot put too much blame on him when the quarterback he is blocking cannot move at all. Even taking steps up in the pocket seem to be difficult for ferotte.

Childress put all of his eggs in one basket this year when thinking that TJack turned the corner and got a subpar backup for him. Hopefully, I believe Childress and TJack's fate are directly related. This offseason, if we dont win a playoff game the Vikikings will be in for a new makeover (New HC, new QBs)
